Not every movie or TV show is intended to be fine art. However, some media have extremely questionable dialogue that feels rushed, unpolished, and strange. You’re not alone if you’ve ever watched a show or movie and felt stumped or uncomfortable due to some peculiar chatter. During a discussion among pop culture lovers, people discussed the cringiest lines they had ever heard – do you feel the same?

1. SATC (1998-2004)

SATC is an iconic show and beloved by many, but unfortunately, the dialogue often leaves much to be desired. People mentioned a few lines from this series, including, “If you’re tired, you take a ‘napa,’ you don’t move to Napa.”

2. Twilight (Multiple Films)

Twilight is the perfect example of a film or series that focuses on pulling in viewers with something other than perfecting the dialogue. There were so many lines from the Twilight movies that people found cringy that it was hard to select just one, but “Hold on tight, spider monkey” was top-notch cringe.

3. Riverdale (2017-2023)

Most people aren’t watching Riverdale for the dialogue. However, many people quoted a particular conversation between Archie and another character. During this conversation, someone from juvie tells Archie, “I dropped out in the fourth grade to run drugs to support my nana.” Archie responds, “That means you haven’t known the triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows of high school football.” Yikes!

4. Scream Queens (2015-2016)

While ordering in a coffee shop, Grace tells Pete (the barista) that her name is “Senorita Awesome” after mentioning that she’s not like other girls because “white girl pumpkin spice lattes” annoy her. Instead, she orders “just a regular coffee.”

5. Glee (2009-2015)

Glee is another example of a consistently cringy show, but most people consider it “campy.” Unfortunately, there are still quite a few problematic lines, which start as early as when Will (the teacher) tells everyone they’re in the glee club because they’re all minorities.

6. You (2018-Present)

Finding a different way to tell your partner you love them is nothing to be ashamed about. However, saying, “I wolf you,” might be one of the cringiest ways to do so. A few people wondered whether they intentionally made the dialogue between Will and Love as strange as possible since personal “couple talk” is “always cringe to the outsider.”

7. Love Story (1970)

Love Story was very popular in the early 70s. Still, the chit-chat doesn’t hold up, especially if you don’t have the nostalgia element at play. “Love means never having to say you’re sorry” is likely this movie’s most quoted and cringiest line.

8. Dexter (2006-2013)

I never thought of Dexter as particularly cringy while watching the series initially. Still, the lines people quoted made me second guess that opinion. For one, Dexter’s sister confesses her love for him, which is a questionable storyline. Another line mentioned multiple times as cringe-worthy is when Dexter says, “Empty inside… just like myself,” after handing out donuts to the precinct.

9. Grey’s Anatomy (2005-Present)

Grey’s Anatomy is one of the longest-running medical dramas still on the air, and they’ve come a long way with the subject matter they address in the show. Unfortunately, no show is perfect, and the dialogue often makes the characters seem cringy and desperate. One example is when Meredith begs Derek to “choose” and “pick” her, which is far from romantic.

10. Hocus Pocus (1993)

My apologies to any die-hard Hocus Pocus fans because people had a lot to say about the lines in this movie, and none of it was good. One person pointed out that a kid calling his shoes “cross-trainers” was unbelievable and that no kid in the 90’s would ever do such a thing. Another moviegoer laughed at the scene where a few characters are bullying trick-or-treaters. One asks, “What are you supposed to be? A New Kid on the Block?”

11. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)

It feels like a sin to say anything negative about Star Wars. However, people had much to say about this film, stating that it is a “gold mine” for cringy lines. “The thought of not being with you… I can’t breathe … You are in my very soul tormenting me,” was just one instance of a line that made viewers roll their eyes.

12. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

Most of the lines from this film (and any subsequent movies in the franchise) are too inappropriate to repeat here. However, if you’ve seen Fifty Shades of Grey, you know the dialogue and acting weren’t exactly Oscar-winning stuff. The most critiqued lines were those shared between the two main characters, which strayed from just being cringy and arguably bordered on abusive at times.
