Some say there is nothing like curling up with a good book on a rainy day. We say there is nothing like sitting down and putting on a rainy movie on a rainy day. No shade to books, but there’s something special about an old favorite film that fits with rainy weather perfectly.
Maybe it’s a favorite show, like Friends or Gilmore Girls, or maybe a full-length film like Pride and Prejudice or Second-Hand Lions, but either way, it’s a whole vibe. And besides that, movies are often a shared experience, so every time you’re watching a movie you know and love, you’re not just seeing the characters and screenplay again, you’re remembering when you watched it and who was there with you.

1. Shutter Island (2010)
U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner (Mark Ruffalo) find themselves at Ashecliffe Hospital, a fortress-like insane asylum on a remote, windswept island in Shutter Island. They are there to investigate the disappearance of a woman who drowned her three children.
It primarily happens during a massive and destructive storm that causes a power outage. As the story unfolds, the situation gradually deteriorates, heightening the film’s suspense and intensity.
2. Se7en (1995)
Se7en follows detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and his new partner, the recently transferred David Mills (Brad Pitt), as they attempt to stop a serial killer before he can complete a series of murders based on the seven deadly sins.
One noteworthy feature of the film is the continual rain, a vision personally attributed to Director David Fincher. His intention was to convey a never-ending and oppressive torrential downpour.
3. The Perfect Storm (2000)
Based on a true story, The Perfect Storm tells the tale of brave men and women who daily put their lives on the line working on fishing vessels and rescue ships. Their greatest apprehension becomes a reality as they find themselves contending with the sudden convergence of three turbulent weather systems, resulting in the most potent storm in recent memory.
4. Identity (2003)
The phrase “on a dark and stormy night” is the perfect way to describe this film. Identity occurs during a vicious storm that causes a group of strangers to hole up at a run-down motel. At the same time, a serial killer awaits execution for murdering a group of motel guests. Eventually, the weary travelers begin to be killed off one by one.

5. Twister (1996)
Twister is an epic disaster film that follows a group of amateur but spirited storm chasers trying to deploy a tornado research device during a severe outbreak in Oklahoma. While there is undoubtedly a lot of rain, there is a lot of devastation too. Maybe not be the best choice for anyone who has been through a natural disaster such as a tornado, but still a great watch.
6. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
The Day After Tomorrow doesn’t just feature rain; it depicts several catastrophic climatic effects following the disruption of the North Atlantic Ocean circulation. First, a series of extreme weather events usher in global cooling and lead to a new ice age.
7. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
In Blade Runner 2049, 30 years following the events of Blade Runner, bioengineered humans known as replicants are enslaved. It rains for most of the film, and while it might seem like there is no meaning behind it, there is.
Blade Runner 2049 presents a glib view of the future, portraying a world where corporations inflict immense harm on the well-being of ordinary people. This recurring motif is mirrored in the perpetual rain, symbolizing the consequences of Los Angeles’ dangerously high pollution levels.

8. Jurassic Park (1993)
Jurassic Park is set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar. Wealthy businessman John Hammond and a team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. As can be expected, this does not go well. During the most intense moments of the film, it is pouring rain. And rain aside, it’s an old favorite, which is ideal for a rainy-day movie session.
9. Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)
Bad Times at the El Royale centers on six strangers and an employee at the El Royale, a hotel located along the California–Nevada border, who arrive with dark personal secrets that eventually intersect on a fateful night in the late 1960s. One of the most memorable moments features Chris Hemsworth, who plays Billy Lee, approaching the hotel during an evening rain storm.
10. The Goonies (1985)
In The Goonies, a group of kids who live in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, attempt to save their homes from foreclosure.
In doing so, they discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. While they end up soaking wet as they run from thieves with bad intentions, they still find the time to be kids.

17. Bridges of Madison County (1995)
Whatever role she plays, Meryl Streep seems to just become it. Bridges of Madison County is no different; Meryl slides into the rural setting as naturally as if she’d been born there. Her ongoing conflict throughout the film is so well portrayed it’s almost tangible. You’ll feel every emotion going through her mind as she plays it perfectly onto the screen. This movie holds a place in our hearts, and for good reason.
18. Harry Potter (2001)
Despite all the hullabaloo, the Harry Potter films still hold their own. From the charm of Hagrid’s tiny cottage to the height of Professor Trelawney’s tower, Hogwarts is bursting with magic, mischief and midnight escapades. Most of us grew up on either the books or the movies, and Harry, Ron and Hermione are still one of the greatest trios we’ve seen on screen.
19. Oceans’ Eleven (2001)
As heist movies go, this is on another level. When Danny Ocean is released from prison, his wife has fallen in love with Terry Benedict, Ocean’s worst enemy. Ocean gathers together a group of eleven men to run a heist on Benedict’s casino. But all through the planning and training montage, you never quite figure out how they’re going to run the heist … until they’re in the middle of it. This is a great film for suspense, humor, revenge and romance, all in one!

20. You’ve Got Mail (1998)
There’s almost no better rom-com than a slow-burn, enemies-and-secret-lovers-simultaneously movie. Tom Hanks and Reese Witherspoon play the owners of separate bookshops; but gradually, his store runs hers out of business. At least, she thinks, she still has the friend she’s been emailing back and forth, in the slow, early days of the internet. Or does she?
21. Titanic (1997)
Is there anything better for a rainy day than a tragic love story? Titanic is such a classic we’ve probably all seen it by now. But is there any moment better than when Kate Winslet’s character spits on her fiancée’s face? Or the sly victory she wins when he comes looking for her after their rescue, and she turns away, well-disguised, still holding the necklace? This one is always worth a re-watch.
22. The Notebook (2004)
There’s not much we’d rather watch than a favorite old love story on a cold, cozy day inside, and The Notebook fits that bill perfectly. From the breathless romantic scenes between Allison and Noah to the old house and the stunning scenes out on the water, it’s one long, delightfully unfolding story of love against the odds. And it all ends in a long, happy marriage between two people still dedicated to each other. We’re pretty big fans.
