10 Movies That Were So Boring They Put Us to Sleep

Avatar The Way of Water (2022)

Sharing is caring!

It’s always a downer when you throw on a new movie and fall asleep because you couldn’t get into it. Even the most well-composed and deep movies can be too slow and dreary to keep you hooked if you’re not in the mood.

Some films are simply too long to hold the audience’s attention, while others lack action and compelling plot points. On the bright side, these are great movies to put on when you’re struggling to fall asleep!

1. The Batman (2022)

This movie had a lot of potential and excitement around it, but with a runtime just short of three hours, it dragged out for too long, resulting in sleepy viewers. The performances were great, and the story was decent, but they should’ve split it into two films because it was too long and colorless to keep people engaged.

2. The Power of the Dog (2021)

The Power of the Dog is a brilliant film, but it moves at a glacial pace and requires a fair amount of willpower to stay focused. Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, and the entire cast are marvelous, and the story is meaningful and cryptic, but it’s easy to get distracted and doze off.

3. Amsterdam (2022)

This film has an all-star cast with the likes of Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, John David Washington, Anya Taylor-Joy, and even Taylor Swift for a minute. But they weren’t enough to save the boring story. The trailers make it look exciting and rich, but it is mostly just the three main characters talking to one another.

4. Lincoln (2012)

Lincoln had a powerhouse director and impressive cast, but it was still too sluggish and mundane to keep people wide awake. The movie is mostly made of serious and nuanced conversations, so keeping track of the plot can be tough if you’re already sleepy, and the deep, dawdling voices are like a lullaby.

5. Dune (2021)

Fans of the Dune book series were excited about this movie, and it delivered for most of them, but people going into this universe blind felt the 2021 movie version was drawn-out, dull, and hard to pay attention to. And it doesn’t help that the visuals in the film are very dark and muted, creating a cozy atmosphere for a nap.

6. Citizen Kane (1941)

Citizen Kane is one of the most iconic films in history, which is crazy because it’s incredibly boring and slow. The best way to watch this movie is with your eyes taped open and your phone in another room. Otherwise, you’re likely to lose interest. Even film fanatics and students find it tough to sit through.

7. Avatar: The Way of the Water (2022)

Both Avatar films are unnecessarily long, but the first half of Avatar: The Way of the Water is particularly slow, setting up the conflicts in the story very slowly. Things don’t get interesting until around the 1.5-hour mark, so maybe they should’ve spent more time in the editing room.

8. Doctor Sleep (2019)

The long-awaited follow-up to The Shining did not stand up to the first movie at all for some fans. The main characters were not nearly as compelling, and the story felt somewhat half-baked, likely because they couldn’t fit everything from the book into the film. While The Shining was an edge-of-your-seat-kind of film, Doctor Sleep put people to sleep, making the title fitting.

9. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

Fifty Shades of Grey was hyped up when it first came out because people loved the book, and the story is so risque and edgy, but the movie itself is a snoozefest. The tension between the two characters is the main focus of the first hour, which is incredibly bland, making it easy to pass out before things even get hot and heavy.

10. The Witch (2015)

This is a fantastic movie, but it is painfully boring. It feels like nothing really happens until the last five minutes or so when everything comes together and gives you chills. It’s boring because it’s slow, not because it’s a bad story. If you want to appreciate it, you have to be in the mood for something subtle and prolonged.
