21 Great Movies We’ve Recently Fallen in Love With

We all have those movies that stay with us long after they’ve ended, the ones that make an indelible impression. Whatever it was, there’s nothing like getting totally absorbed in a great cinematic experience, forgetting about reality for two hours, and immersing yourself in another world.

In this list, we’ve pulled together all the films we’ve loved recently. There’s a movie for every taste and occasion here; from modern thrillers and dark comedies to classic vintage Hollywood and amusing animations. Let’s take some time out of our day to talk about what truly interests us—the thrilling stories in the film! 

1. Sin City (2005)

Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez co-wrote, co-produced, and co-directed the 2005 American crime thriller Sin City, also known as Frank Miller’s Sin City. This film is an interesting combination of cinematic storytelling and comic-book visuals. It’s a unique taste, and we’re glad it exists! A great film to watch again and again.

2. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is another successful DreamWorks movie. The story revolves around Puss, who discovers that his love of adventure has taken a toll when he learns that he has used up eight of his nine lives. He then embarks on an epic quest to discover the mystical Last Wish and reclaim his nine lives with his other two frenemies. Wisecracks, one-liners, and a quest to stay alive; what more could you ask for?

3. Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)

Everything Everywhere All At Once is a multiverse action comedy that also involves a deeply personal family story. Its multiverse trappings are set pieces that serve to emphasize the fundamental message: family, love, and finding joy in one’s life are all that matter. But in the search for those things, the effects of a single action in one universe can cause ripple effects throughout the others. How much damage can one person do?

4. Children of Men (2006)

John Taverner’s Children of Men is a movie worth rewatching, as it will reveal something new to you every time you do—from the music, the editing, the characters, the tale, and all of the small things that make it feel so authentic. As for Clive Owen, he sets such a high bar for himself in this film. 

Children of Men is a movie that delves into issues of hope and faith in the midst of overwhelming futility and sorrow. The film’s source, P. D. James’ novel The Children of Men (1992), depicts what occurs when civilization is unable to procreate, citing male infertility as an example.

5. The Whale (2022)

The movie The Whale surrounds Charlie, who is a reclusive and unhealthy English teacher in Idaho who hides up in his flat and eats himself to death. He is trying to reconnect with his adolescent daughter for one final opportunity at atonement. This film is a blunt and challenging portrayal of the effects that grief, loss and betrayal can have on the life of a family. 

6. All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

In 1914, war broke out in Germany. Paul Bäumer and his classmates soon volunteered in the army to serve their homeland. Soon after they are drafted, the first photographs from the battlefield reveal the reality of war.

Another war film that was never unduly gory but did not skimp on the bloodshed—from trenches to scavenging, country scenes, camera framing, and so forth.  This is a must-see for everyone who hasn’t seen it and appreciates war films that have more than just shoot-em-up scenes.

7. Casablanca (1942)

Casablanca: if you haven’t seen it yet, put this one on your list right away! This war film is set in Morocco, because “of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.” That’s a famous quote by Humphrey Bogart, playing Rick Blaine, who’s in love with a married woman. To what lengths will he go to protect her? What if it comes at the cost of never seeing her again?

8. Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)

Another Guillermo Del Toro masterpiece. The Pinocchio movie was beautifully made, and it was interesting to see such a strange take on the story. The story of Pinocchio has always wrestled with life, grief, death, and resurrection, but this rendition takes on a new, real-world aspect that puts an almost frightening consequence on the answers to these questions.

9. Little Miss Sunshine (2019)

In this comedic movie take on dysfunctional family dynamics, Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Paul Dano, and Alan Arkin play various roles as members of the Hoover family. The group takes a VW bus to California to cheer on Olive Hoover (Abigail Breslin) as she competes for the title of Little Miss Sunshine. As they travel along their interstate route, the group’s eccentricities generate tremendous problems, pushing everyone’s sanity to its limits.

10. The Menu (2022)

The Menu movie is somewhat Gordon Ramsey-esque, as it explores the interconnected worlds of restaurants, foodies, and food media. From the snobbery of the wealthy to the idolization of chefs to sexual assault in the kitchen, the film presents a relentless stream of brutality in a restaurant thriller. All the guests at the restaurant are left wondering what is actually being served up here? And is there any choice left on the menu?

11. Jojo Rabbit (2022)

Jojo Rabbit is about Jojo, a young boy in WWII Germany whose mother, unbeknownst to him, has concealed a Jewish girl in their attic. As the war rages on, Jojo is forced to confront his blind nationalism with the help of his imaginary friend Adolf H. Loss, grief and new friendship open up the consequences of ideas to young Jojo, and his worldview changes as the world around him does.

12. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

While their mother recovers from a sickness in a nearby hospital, schoolgirl Satsuke and her younger sister Mei move into an ancient rural house with their father. As the sisters investigate their new home and the surrounding forest they meet amusing spirits, among whom is the enormous, cuddly monster Totoro, whom they befriend. This film is a critically-praised animated tale by director Hayao Miyazaki.

13. Parasite (2019)

Parasite is a Korean movie that revolves around antagonism and greed. This poses a danger to the mutually beneficial partnership between the affluent Park family and the impoverished Kim family. But when an attempt to escape poverty is based on deceptions and lies, can any good come from the arrangement?

14. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

When it came to Hollywood sequels, Top Gun: Maverick was among the longest in waiting times. The movie story revolves around a squad of fresh Top Gun’s newest grads—among them, the son of Maverick’s late closest friend. In order to prepare for a perilous mission, Maverick must confront his own history. Will he be able to overcome the scars of the past in order to insure the future?

15. Starship Troopers

American author Robert A. Heinlein wrote the science fiction military novel Starship Troopers. This was the inspiration for the movie, which is about an extraterrestrial civilization of enormous insects that invades Earth in the far future, causing widespread destruction. A mobile infantry unit goes on a galactic crusade against the bugs on other planets. No matter the cost, their savage enemy’s sole purpose is to ensure the survival of their kind.

16. Dune

Dune is a movie about Paul Atreides, a clever and gifted young man born into an unknown destiny. He must journey to the universe’s most perilous planet to secure the future of his family and people. As sinister forces clash over the planet’s sole supply of the most valuable substance in existence, only those who can overcome their own fear will live.

17. The Platform (2019)

The characters in The Platform are ensnared in the Hole, a never-ending horror of a prison. Each level of the penitentiary system is a single cell, with room for two individuals. Each day, a single platform lowers down full of food. It stops for two minutes at each level to give prisoners a chance to eat. But the lower you are within the hole, the less food is left on the platform when it arrives, and prisoners resort to desperate measures.

18. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)

During the height of the Cold War, an enigmatic criminal organization plotted to disrupt the delicate power balance between the US and the USSR by utilizing nuclear weapons and technology. The CIA agent Napoleon Solo and the KGB agent Illya Kuryakin must set aside their animosity and collaborate to foil the villains’ plans. The only person who can help the duo identify a missing German scientist is her daughter, and they need to find her quickly before a worldwide disaster occurs.

19. The Equalizer, Parts 1 and 2 (2014, 2018)

For the sake of a peaceful retirement, ex-special forces commando Robert McCall pretended to die. But rather than remaining in obscurity to live out his days peacefully, he awakens his thirst for justice after confronting members of a vicious Russian gang and emerges from his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl.

20. The Mummy, 1999

In the tense, thrilling, and terrifying epic OG movie The Mummy, a group of adventurers venture into the Sahara Desert in 1925 in search of buried treasure. As they happen across an old tomb, the hunters unleash a dread that has been dormant for three thousand years. The enraged reincarnation of an Egyptian priest, who had been condemned to an eternity among the living dead, embodies this legacy.

21. Cast Away

The plane carrying FedEx executive Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) goes down in the middle of the Pacific Ocean during a storm while he is on his way to a job in Malaysia. Chuck lands on an uninhabited island as the only survivor of the trip. Chuck spends years on the island, learning to survive with just his volleyball companion, Wilson, after his attempts to sail away and contact aid fail.
