10 Moments That Landed People in a Traffic Stop
The privilege of driving also comes with the obligation to operate your vehicle responsibly. If you don’t, you risk getting caught in a law enforcement traffic stop, which can result in a costly lesson. Someone asked an online group of drivers to recount the times they did something stupid behind the wheel that got them pulled over, and their stories will have you shaking your head in disbelief.
1. Speed Trap Warning
One Sunday morning, a driver navigated a two-lane highway in suburban St. Louis, Missouri. They spotted a police officer at the side of the road with a radar gun, but since they were within the speed limit, they had no worries. As they drove a little further, they saw a car going in the opposite direction, and the driver flashed their headlights to warn them that a speed trap was ahead. It turns out the other vehicle was an unmarked police car. The driver was pulled over and given a ticket for interfering with the use of police radar.
2. Underage Driving
Someone in the discussion recalls when they were 15 years old and snuck out of their house one night to meet her boyfriend. She took her stepdad’s car to her boyfriend’s house to pick him up. He wanted to drive, so he drove them to a friend’s house. They noticed other drivers flashing their headlights at them but ignored the warnings. Soon enough, the police pulled them over for not having their headlights on. They avoided arrest, but needless to say, their parents weren’t happy.
3. Snow Donuts
An online group member describes how they were busted during a major snowstorm in Cincinnati, Ohio, that shut down the city to drivers. At 3 a.m., they and their co-worker from Texas were driving from work back to their hotel. The co-worker mentioned he had never made donuts in the snow. They came across a wide intersection, and after making sure they were the only vehicle on the road, they did a few donuts. However, they didn’t notice the police officer sitting at a nearby gas station, who let them off with a warning.
4. The Need for Speed, Part 1
Another driver remembers how they escaped arrest and were let off with a ticket when caught disregarding the speed limit. They were doing 85 miles an hour in a 45-mile-an-hour zone and riding a motorcycle without the proper license to indicate they were permitted to operate one. They were fortunate not to end up in handcuffs that day.

5. Spinning Tires
Someone else in the online community added a lot of performance modifications to their car. One day, while driving with a friend, they were stopped at a four-way intersection. The only vehicle in the vicinity was a sedan parked about 100 feet away. They simultaneously stepped on the brake and gas pedals, which got the right rear tire spinning and smoking before driving through the intersection. That’s when they discovered the parked sedan was a police car. They pulled over for the officer, who laughed at the driver’s stunt. The officer let them off with a warning.
6. No Passing
Somebody was driving home after a long day at work and was rushing home to hang out with their friends and girlfriend. They were following a black SUV about to make a right turn on a curve in a no-passing zone. They didn’t want to wait for the SUV to turn, so they passed it. A few seconds later, they saw the police vehicle’s lights flashing behind them. As it turns out, the black SUV they illegally passed was an unmarked police car. After pleading their case with the officer, they received a stern warning not to do that again.
7. Stay In Your Lane
A contributor to the chat says they were driving a little too close to the car immediately in front of them. Another vehicle further along the way started turning right, and they had to cross over into the other lane so they wouldn’t rear-end the car in front of them. The police pulled them over and cited them for not staying within the marked lanes.

8. The Need for Speed, Part 2
At the time of the incident, this participant was 23 and drove a 1976 Toyota Celica GT they were restoring. It just so happened that their car performed best at high speeds, like between 80 and 90 miles an hour. One night, they were driving super-fast on an empty stretch of road when they noticed a policeman sitting on the side of the road with his radar gun up. They were going 85 in a 40 mph zone.
9. School Zone Violation
One accidental speeder in the online forum recollects how they were driving on a highway in Texas with a speed limit of 65 mph. Along the road is an elementary school, and that section has a speed limit of 35 mph. While the school zone signs were down for upgrading, the out-of-town driver failed to slow down because they were unfamiliar with the area and ended up with A $300 ticket for driving more than 24 mph over the school zone speed limit.
10. Lights Out
A self-described stupid teen (at least they used to be) was driving home from work at 2 a.m. They were driving along a dark road that they were familiar with and decided to turn off their lights not once but twice. After the second time, a police officer driving behind them pulled them over. They received a ticket for reckless driving.
