Even before the internet existed, it took a thick skin to be a celebrity. The rich and famous have their every move and word scrutinized, and saying or doing the wrong thing can result in bad publicity. Some of the world’s most famous stars have weathered even the worst of controversies, yet they still have the adoration of their fans.

1. Madonna

In many ways, Madonna blazed the trail for many of today’s women artists like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, and Cardi B. During the height of her career, some roundly condemned her for intertwining religious and sexual imagery in her music and videos. Despite the unending criticism she received, Madonna never compromised her creative vision, which is what makes her an icon.

Most people are fortunate enough to go through their adolescent and young adult phases out of the spotlight. As Disney’s famous character Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus didn’t have that luxury. When she tried to move past the character and become herself, people treated her as a public menace when she was just a young person trying to figure things out. Her hard work over the years has paid off, and she is now a highly respected singer.

3. Martha Stewart

To everyone’s surprise, she’s come out on the other side better and more prosperous than ever. Instead of trying to hide from her mistakes, she leans into them. Martha Stewart has shown a more human, funny side to herself while proving that she’s still a boss.

Despite being an accomplished musician in her own right, Courtney Love is probably best known as the widow of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain. Since he died in 1994, there have been numerous conspiracy theories about his death relating to foul play. Many of those theories falsely blame her for Cobain’s untimely death. Love has endured more than her fair share of hardships, but she holds a special place in the hearts of those rooting for her continued success.

The former Mouseketeer spent the earlier part of her singing career negatively compared to Britney Spears, a fellow ex-Mouseketeer. Spears was the wholesome, all-American girl, while Aguilera was the edgy bad girl. She was famously involved in feuds with Pink and Eminem and has been publicly fat-shamed. No matter how much ugliness the media throws her way, Xtina has always carried herself with poise and grace, something her legion of fans appreciate about her, in addition to her immense talent.

Walt Disney was something of a complicated persona. He is responsible for creating some of the most beloved cartoon characters and movies, not to mention his revolutionary theme parks. While his genius cannot be denied, to this day, there have been allegations of Disney’s bigotry and misogyny. Those claims haven’t affected the billions of dollars the Disney Corporation earns annually, and they haven’t blunted the adoration of fans worldwide.

10. Britney Spears

Like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears came to prominence as a Mouseketeer. When her musical career started, the media built her up as the girl next door who could do no wrong. But when she proved herself to be all too human, the press hounded her relentlessly. Her issues were not only broadcast for the world to see, but they also led to her placement in conservatorship. Her fans initiated the #FreeBritney movement to help her regain her independence, which she did in 2021. Recent documentaries about her past detail the unfair treatment from the media over the years. Let’s hope the media backs off and allows her to live her life.
