17 Things People Are Only Pretending To Enjoy, but Secretly Despise
In a world filled with societal pressures, people often feel the need to crack fake smiles. But it’s no surprise that most of the time, it’s a delicate facade waiting to be unveiled. From rapidly changing social media trends to the current global news to celebrity hot gossip, it’s just too hard to keep up. Here are eleven things people detest but pretend to enjoy.
1. Eating In Loud Restaurants Where You Can’t Hear Each Other
Have you ever been to one of those family dinners where you have to nod and smile because you can’t hear a single thing over all the noise? Well, I know for sure that everyone despises them. Sitting there reading lips in hopes of understanding what the other person is saying gets frustrating despite the exchange of smiles.
2. Anybody on a Stage Asking, “How Is Everybody?!!!”
Picture this: You’re attending a concert, waiting for the artist to begin. Here comes the host screaming, “How is everybody??!!” which is almost always followed by a “You can do better than that!” Just to get the person to leave the stage, you hoot and cheer until they’re satisfied while secretly regretting every life choice.
3. Working Overtime
Capitalism has got us sprinting in an attempt to get ahead of the unfinishable race. Working overtime is often something people brag about. “Today, I completed my work and then did 42 hours of Karen’s work as well.” The truth is, no one likes to work. They only want those brownie points.

4. Going To Corporate Events
Fake smiles and false banter are mandatory at your typical workplace event. Whether you’re hosting or just attending as a guest, you have to seem like you’re enjoying it. The social media guy might even ask you for some content, but that doesn’t mean anyone there is actually having fun.
5. Listening to People Sing the Birthday Song
Probably one of the most awkward things you have to endure on your birthday is everyone’s terrible iteration of Happy Birthday. I get it; it’s supposed to be fun and cute, but it really isn’t. It’s even worse when you’re celebrating in a public place, and the entire restaurant’s eyes are on you.
6. Reading LinkedIn Posts
If you’ve ever used the app, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. From dramatic captions to people bragging about every corporate achievement to incredibly fake comments, it’s an utter abomination. But, sadly, we all need to do it if we want to gain career points.
7. Wearing Gucci Sandals
You might’ve seen these viral flip-flops floating around the internet, and to be honest, they’re pretty ugly. People today are obsessed with expensive brands, but that doesn’t mean they like what they see. Just because a five-hundred-dollar plastic shoe has the Gucci logo on it does not make it good.
8. Watching Other People’s Holiday Photos
Not to be mean, but watching other people’s holiday photos is not as great as they make it out to be. The only thing it does is make you envious of stuff you can’t seem to have. But, when people insist on going through every single picture, you have no choice but to sit, smile, and pretend to love it.

9. Eating Extreme Hot Sauces
People who handle spice well make themselves out to be some sort of superior beings. Everyone fakes enjoying the kick, but we all know they’re dying inside. Just because you can eat 50x spicy ramen does not mean you’re some sort of a hero.
10. Keeping up on Influencers
Keeping up on the trends and behaviors of influencers. It just adds unnecessary drama to life. It’s just people pretending to be extraordinary on social media just to get more likes and attention.
11. Most Music on the Radio
Radio stations used to be a hub of culture where you could discover new underground bands and get your rock on. Nowadays, stations keep on playing those hundred-year-old playlists with the same songs on repeat over and over again.
12. Gender Reveal Parties
Gender reveal parties are a craze born from the Instagram social media era. The once simple act of learning what the gender of a baby is going to be has become overblown with pomp and circumstance.
13. Small Talk
Making small talk is a skill that it seems people either have or do not have. Whether it is silent air with a new acquaintance or catching up with someone at a party, it is not for me. Small talk tends to feel forced, uncomfortable, and I am left wondering who is even getting any value from this conversation.

14. Running
There are two camps when it comes to running. Those who are runners and those who are not. To those who are not runners, the hobby seems like a torturous event.
15. Drinking Kombucha
The vinegary fermented beverage is touted as being an ultra-health food. Without getting into the merits of whether it provides the reported health benefits or not, kombucha is just generally unpalatable without a bunch of other additives.
16. Drinking La Croix
La Croix is a drink that took the nation by storm a few years ago. While flavored sparkling water is not a new concept, La Croix was wildly successful. At its core, it is still a bitter drink.
17. Eating Quinoa
Quinoa is often viewed as a health food. While it can be flavorful, it seems that it is often used as a substitute to make a recipe seem healthier and is not utilized enjoyably.
